Lifeguard Training, Fitness, Weights
It’s like the show Baywatch, except they actually get to save lives and till look good like Hasselhoff. Yes, they carry those orange buoys, but the LA County lifeguards are not there for anyone’s entertainment—they employ over 650 seasonal lifeguards with over a hundred full-time staff. All of these employees work extremely hard to keep the beaches of Los Angles safe for beachgoers, boaters, commercial workers, and sportsman alike.
As a division of the fire department, they have many resources, at both a physical and a personnel level, available to them and that means much safer beaches. Using watchtowers, rescue boats, and basic patrol, the LA County lifeguards are often the line between life and death for those caught in the Pacific. They make both onshore and rescues out at sea; whether on the surface or underwater.
Their main missions are to make ocean rescues. This means swimmers and disabled boaters. This can mean saving someone from drowning or providing medical assistance. While this can be the exciting part featured on television, they also support local law enforcement, find lost children, and enforce environmental laws as well.
They accomplish this using various on-water and on-land vehicles. Ten rescue boats keep the waters patrolled and over 50 beach cruisers work to keep the beach safe. Aside from these patrol vehicles, the county keeps around a 150 watchtowers with 15 substations to help keep a watchful eye over everyone.
LA County lifeguards can also respond to small boat and pier fires as well. Additionally, their services can be used in the case of a downed plane that hits the ocean off the county shores. They can also provide services in the recovery of deceased victims in lakes inside the county.
Because of LA’s location along the ocean and the warm climate, swimmers, surfers, and other sportsmen use the ocean nearly year round. This is why their personnel designate safe times during which these activities can be enjoyed using posted flags and signs around the beach. They also maintain staff professionally trained in assisting accidents in these areas.
Essentially, they are the law and your friend on the beach. And even though they may appear as if they are simply relaxing on the beach, they have been extremely well trained and they are there for your needs—needs that you hopefully will never experience. Of course, don’t hesitate to ask an actual lifeguard or any questions you may have, and bring any concerns you have to them immediately.
